Cyclone Idai has ravaged parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in what the UN says could be the worst weather-related disaster ever to hit the southern hemisphere. Entire cities have been destroyed. Millions of people were in the direct path of the cyclone. The region has been hit by widespread flooding and devastation affecting Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
The storm, packing winds up to 177 km/h , and landed a direct hit on Mozambique’s fourth-largest city, Beira, home to half a million people. The city is almost totally submerged. Idai then stalled out over the mountainous border between Mozambique and Zimbabwe, causing massive landslides that swept away roads and homes.
Before the storm even made landfall, its outer bands caused flooding in neighboring Malawi, killing more than 120, demonstrating just how huge the storm was.
The Red Cross said in a statement Monday that 90 percent of Beira was either damaged or destroyed. Communication out of the city has been slow, with telephone lines knocked out. The city is connected to Mozambique’s road network by a single highway through a low-lying plain.
Beira is home to a major port that is essential for the supply of goods to the central part of the country, as well as Zimbabwe and Malawi, which are landlocked.
Beira City has suffered extensive damage, according to reports from preliminary assessments and aerial overviews.
•Heavy rainfall is projected to continue in Sofala and Manica provinces from 19 to 21 March.
Damage assessments are just beginning, and parts of Zambezia and Sofala provinces had already been inundated with flooding when the cyclone made landfall. It is likely the vast areas of flood water are isolating many communities, which may severely hamper relief efforts over the next week.
At least 1.7 million people were in the direct path of the cyclone in Mozambique and 920,000 have been affected in Malawi, according to the United Nations

Beira and other districts of Sofala province are facing power and communication outages, according to initial reports from the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) Several Villages along the coastline in the northern Zambezi provinces have been cut off from the mainland by storm surge flooding. Cyclone Idai was bringing more floodwater and destruction to areas of Mozambique and Malawi as Parts of Mozambique were cut off on Friday as the storm battered the coast and the major port city of Beira with heavy rain and winds of up to up 170 kph (105 mph). according to RSMC La Reunion Over the past 6 hours, Ex- Tropical cyclone Idai has continued to move inland while rapidly weakening, It should keep its WNW track and reach the border with Zimbabwe by the end of the afternoon. Even if the winds will decay significantly, the remains of the circulation are forecast to persist for several days, bringing heavy rains on Zimbabwe and the border area with Mozambique up to early next week. After Landfall : After landfall, Cyclone Idai is expected to track inland, bringing heavy rain to central Mozambique and potentially into eastern Zimbabwe. The latest projections indicate that Idai may then turn back east and re-enter the Mozambique Channel, potentially going on to impact southern Madagascar. – according to the United Nations.

Tropical Cyclone Idai has formed in the Mozambique Channel and will bring flooding rain and strong winds to the Mozambique coastline. The Mozambique National Meteorology Institute (INAM) noted that Tropical Cyclone Idai is causing very heavy rains of more than 100 millimeters in 24 hours over the Mozambique Channel.Idai was moving to the west. Maximum sustained winds were near 166.7 kph) with higher gusts.and is expected to strengthen into intense tropical cyclone status (Category 4 equivalent) again prior to making landfall.
Idai is forecast to make landfall just north of Biera, Mozambique between Thursday morning and early evening on Friday. Beira is the fourth largest city in the country and is located in the Sofala Province, central region of the country. Idai is now expected to strike central Mozambique on Thursday night or Friday onshore with hurricane-force destructive winds, thunderstorms and flooding rain in the vicinity of Beira. Life-threatening storm-surge flooding can put coastal communities underwater near and south of where Idai makes landfall.
Rain and wind has started to increase along the coast of central Mozambique before the worst of the storm rages from Thursday night into Friday.
The Death toll has reached up to 115 people who were killed in Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa after heavy rains affected 843,000 people across southeast Africa, At least 66 people have been killed by floods in northern and central Mozambique, 45 in Malawi and four in Northeastern South Africa following torrential rains that have triggered flash floods. according to local authorities and the United Nations.
