Cyclone Freddy’s reign comes to an end – March 15, 2023

After over 33 days as a tropical cyclone, Freddy’s remnant energy is rapidly draining as it continues to splurge across Mozambique and southern Malawi, with some of its remnant energy stretching across to Madagascar once again. However, winds are now very low and rainfall is decreasing. This brings an end to Freddy’s remarkable trek, transcending time, distance, and energy records in the process.

Elsewhere, a tropical depression has formed to the east of the northern islands of Tonga, with a small window for further development before it unravels again.

Near New Caledonia, another system is brewing, and could develop into a tropical cyclone as it travels down the spine of the main island before eventually turning around next week. Heavy rainfall is expected, with maximums of over 15 inches (375mm) possible.
