Devastating Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which has made its second landfall in southern Africa, has killed at least 216 people in Malawi and Mozambique and the death toll is expected to rise.
Torrential rains that triggered floods and landslides killed 199 people in Malawi, authorities said. President Lazarus Chakwera has declared a “state of emergency” in the country’s southern region and the now-destroyed commercial capital of Blantyre. About 19,000 people in the south of the country have been displaced, according to the Malawi Disaster Management Authority. The most affected areas remain inaccessible, so the full extent of the damage is still unknown.
Reports from the Mozambique Disaster Institute confirmed that 17 people were killed in the country and 1,900 houses were destroyed in the coastal province of Zambezia. The United Nations Meteorological Center on Reunion Island predicts that Freddy will continue to batter central Mozambique and southern Malawi with heavy rain before moving back out to sea.
