Tropical Cyclone Idai has formed in the Mozambique Channel and will bring flooding rain and strong winds to the Mozambique coastline. The Mozambique National Meteorology Institute (INAM) noted that Tropical Cyclone Idai is causing very heavy rains of more than 100 millimeters in 24 hours over the Mozambique Channel.Idai was moving to the west. Maximum sustained winds were near 166.7 kph) with higher gusts.and is expected to strengthen into intense tropical cyclone status (Category 4 equivalent) again prior to making landfall.
Idai is forecast to make landfall just north of Biera, Mozambique between Thursday morning and early evening on Friday. Beira is the fourth largest city in the country and is located in the Sofala Province, central region of the country. Idai is now expected to strike central Mozambique on Thursday night or Friday onshore with hurricane-force destructive winds, thunderstorms and flooding rain in the vicinity of Beira. Life-threatening storm-surge flooding can put coastal communities underwater near and south of where Idai makes landfall.
Rain and wind has started to increase along the coast of central Mozambique before the worst of the storm rages from Thursday night into Friday.
The Death toll has reached up to 115 people who were killed in Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa after heavy rains affected 843,000 people across southeast Africa, At least 66 people have been killed by floods in northern and central Mozambique, 45 in Malawi and four in Northeastern South Africa following torrential rains that have triggered flash floods. according to local authorities and the United Nations.
After Landfall : After landfall, Cyclone Idai is expected to track inland, bringing heavy rain to central Mozambique and potentially into eastern Zimbabwe. The latest projections indicate that Idai may then turn back east and re-enter the Mozambique Channel, potentially going on to impact southern Madagascar. – according to the United Nations.
