Tropical cyclone Idai, the biggest to hit Mozambique in over a decade, made landfall on Thursday evening just north of the port city of Beira. The cyclone hit Mozambique with winds of up to 177km/h (106 mph). It cut off power to more than 500,000 residents in the port city of Beira, one the country’s largest cities. Cyclone Idai, which brought floodwater and destruction to areas of Mozambique and Malawi, hit Zimbabwe on Friday, cutting off power and communications. Cyclone Idai also cut off power and communications in parts of Manicaland province on the border with Mozambique. Some 40 people are missing. State television ZBC said 31 people had died in the district while more than 70 people were missing. footage showed roads, houses and bridges that were washed away while communication towers were knocked down and electricity cables blocked roads in the Chimanimani district, 410 kilometers (255 miles) east of the capital Harare Cyclone Idai has affected more than 1.5 million people in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, according to the United Nations and government officials. Ex-Idai (now a Tropical Depression) has weakened since making landfall over Mozambique.
