Tropical Cyclone Idai has formed in the Mozambique Channel and will bring flooding rain and strong winds to Madagascar and parts of the Mozambique coastline into early week. Tropical Cyclone IDAI to arrive over the Zambezi delta on Mozambique's central coastline between Wednesday 13 March and Friday 15th March. Tropical Cyclone Idai will remain in an area favorable for strengthening over the next couple days. The warm water, in combination with lower wind shear over the region, will produce ideal conditions for further strengthening. While the strongest winds will remain offshore during this time, gusty winds are expected from near Mahajanga southward to Mainirano. A few gusts up to 65 km/h (40 mph) are possible during this time.By the end of the weekend as the cyclone continues to move towards Madagascar, Idai is expected to strengthen into a severe tropical storm with maximum sustained wind speed is 75 km/h. Areas that experience a prolonged onshore wind will also be at risk for coastal flooding. Rough surf and seas will also be a concern along the west coast of Madagascar into early week. Multiple Forecasts indicate a slow or possibly stationary track motion through 36 hours, and thereafter, the cyclone is forecast to accelerate west-southwestward towards Mozambique…. Some meteorological models predict it will intensify to a category 4 Tropical Cyclone as it moves into Mozambique over the small town of Chinde at the mouth of the Zambezi River. According to the ECMWF Computer Model -Idai is forecast to landfall by Wednesday, March 13 the cyclone is forecast to reach a peak intensity of 115 knots within 72 hours. After landfall, the system will weaken rapidly.
