When we charge our phone, the charger is plugged into a 240V home socket. But our phone only needs 5V to charge safely. How does this happen?

Inside the charger, there is a small device called a transformer. This transformer converts the high 240V voltage to a lower voltage. It steps down the voltage to around 5V, which is safe for our phone battery.

Along with the transformer, there is a circuit that converts AC (alternating current) from the socket to DC (direct current), because phones and most electronics work on DC power. This process is called rectification and it happens instantly when you plug in the charger.

This is why when you touch your phone while charging, you do not get an electric shock. The charger only gives out 5V DC, which is very low and safe for human touch. But remember, if you touch the wires inside the plug or charger circuit directly, it is still dangerous because that side carries the 240V before conversion.

So, chargers protect us by reducing high voltage to a small, usable, and safe voltage for our devices.
