France Cyclone Live | 'Several Hundred' Feared Dead After Cyclone Chido Hits Island Of Mayotte

Cyclone Chido, the most severe storm to strike the French archipelago Mayotte in nearly a century, may have claimed “several hundred” lives, with officials warning the death toll could rise into the thousands. Prefect Francois-Xavier Bieuville expressed uncertainty about the precise number of casualties, stating that the situation remains dire.

The French interior ministry confirmed at least 11 deaths but acknowledged the difficulty in accounting for all victims at this stage. Authorities highlighted challenges in ascertaining the full scale of destruction, compounded by concerns over food, water and sanitation access.

Meteo France reported that the cyclone swept through the Indian Ocean territory with winds exceeding 200km/h (124mph), severely damaging makeshift housing, government facilities and a hospital.

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou described the storm as “unexpectedly violent” after an inter-ministerial meeting, reflecting the shock across the region.
