Animation of the track of Cyclone Idai, responsible for over 500 deaths in eastern Africa.
The system began as a disturbance over Mozambique and Malawi, delivering chaos before it even reached tropical storm status when it re-emerged over the Mozambique Channel. From there it rapidly intensified and reached Category 4 status on two occasions, before broadening and making landfall 20 miles NE of Beira as a Category 3.
