STORYLINE:
Cyclone Freddy, which pummelled Madagascar Tuesday night with heavy rains and strong destructive winds, battered the western city of Mananjary and left thousands displaced.
The death toll in Madagascar has risen to seven people after the cyclone made landfall on Tuesday evening, according to the country’s risk and disaster management office.
Freddy left 68,500 people displaced and damaged nearly 5,000 homes in the country, according to the latest provisional assessment by Madagascar's risk and disaster management office.
On Wednesday, residents in Mananjary worked to clean up the destruction caused by the cyclone.
"The house is not strong, it was a temporary house. We have no money to build it," said local, Beatrice Tiana,..
Freddy was set to regain strength as it barrels towards mainland Africa, with Mozambique in its path, the United Nation's meteorological centre in Reunion has estimated.
It is due to make landfall in the country on Friday morning.
The U.N. weather agency warned that the cyclone will lash Mozambique as a “strong tropical storm with potentially damaging winds.”
