Chaos in the UK Today! Storm Austen hits the UK: Major travel disruption and thousands without power
Storm Austen hits UK as yellow wind warnings in effect. Yellow weather warnings remain in force as Storm Austen batters a large swathe of the UK with powerful winds and heavy rain on Friday.
South West England is forecast to be worst hit by the storm which the Met Office warns could bring travel disruption and power cuts and a possible danger to life.
Wind gusts of 60-70mph, with 80mph in exposed locations, are forecast across Cornwall and parts of Devon, where the Met Office warning is in force until 17:00 BST.
Wind gust of 45-55mph are forecast more widely across most of England and Wales, where a less severe yellow warning will be in force until 21:00 BST.
A separate yellow warning for rain covers part of Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, until just before midnight on Saturday.
The primary impacts of Storm Austen include:
• Widespread Power Outages: In France, approximately 161,000 households lost power, with the Brittany region being the hardest hit (128,000 homes). Meanwhile, in Cornwall and Devon, England, thousands of homes also experienced power cuts.
• Infrastructure Damage: High waves and strong winds caused a portion of the historic West Pier structure in Brighton, England, to collapse.
• Transport Disruption: Hundreds of fallen trees blocked roads and railway lines, including routes operated by Great Western Railway and South Western Railway. Flights at airports in Guernsey, Jersey, and Exeter were cancelled, and ferry services across the English Channel were suspended.
• School Closures: All schools in Jersey and Guernsey were forced to close for safety reasons.
As the impact of Storm Austen began to subside on Friday evening, authorities began monitoring the progress of Storm Boelo the second storm of the season which is expected to follow and bring strong winds to Northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern England over the weekend.
