Tropical Cyclone Gezani tore through Madagascar’s main port city, flattening homes and killing at least 31 people as it swept across the Indian Ocean island with intense winds and heavy rain. The national weather service issued red alerts in several regions, warning of potential floods and landslides after the storm made landfall late Tuesday with wind speeds exceeding 195 kph (121 mph). It then barreled across the island nation of 31 million, where many residents live in poverty and lack adequate protection against powerful storms.
