Fear of Flying & Ocean Crossings: A Long-Haul Captain Breakdown (Flyman Simon)
Descrição
In this episode of the Lovefly Podcast, host Paul Tizzard is joined for a 3rd time by long-haul airline captain Simon Belmont (FlymanSimon). Captain Simon addresses real, anonymous questions directly from nervous fliers—covering power bank safety, flying near named storms, oceanic route backup systems, and the truth about aircraft redundancy.
What you'll learn in this episode:
The exact step-by-step containment procedures for overheating lithium batteries in the air.
How airlines plan days in advance to navigate around hurricanes and named storms.
What ETOPS is and why modern twin-engine planes are safer over water than ever before.
Inside the flight deck: Security protocols and how captains train for their "worst day, not average day."

[01:21] – Introduction & Welcome: Host Paul introduces long-haul captain Simon Belmont (known online as Flyman Simon).
[02:30] – Captain Simon's Background: Simon details his 17-year military career flying Tornado jets and C-17s, before transitioning to commercial airlines (flying A330, A340, and A350 aircraft).
[04:30] – Fear-of-Flying Resources: Discussion of Simon's products and courses, including the Turbulence Trio, Pilot Companion, and Confident Flight Pack.
[08:24] – Safety of Power Banks & Lithium Batteries: How airlines handle potential power bank risks, cargo hold suppression systems, and passenger cabin safety protocols.
[12:48] – Flight Deck Security & Secondary Barrier Doors: Explanation of flight deck security procedures and the purpose behind installing secondary barrier doors.
[14:40] – Named Storms vs. Aviation Operations: How meteorology departments name storms and how airlines track weather days in advance to safely navigate around major weather events.
[21:20] – Flying Over Water & ETOPS Operations: Deep dive into how airliners are engineered ("built to fail and fly"), redundant backup systems, and twin-engine ETOPS certification.
[29:47] – Demystifying Turbulence: An explanation of what turbulence actually is, how an aircraft wing generates lift, why "drops" are a sensory illusion, and seatbelt safety.
[37:17] – Lovefly Lounge Guest Q&A (Janice & Barry Join):
[37:30] – Managing fear during turbulence: Relating aircraft movement to trains/buses and why altimeters show minimal actual vertical movement.
[44:03] – Overcoming boarding anxiety: Tips for staying calm during boarding, managing passenger assist options, and avoiding the "fight-or-flight" peak.
[58:19] – Rerouting around bad weather: How pilots and air traffic control make real-time decisions to avoid weather systems.
[01:02:00] – Autoland Systems in Fog: How Category 3 Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) guide airplanes to safe landings in zero visibility.
[01:14:52] – Quick-Fire Questions & Final Thoughts: Captain Simon discusses his worst flight experiences (handling a hydraulic failure) and closing advice for fearful flyers.

Captain Simon pointed out that modern airliners carry up to 4 backup systems for critical components so they are literally built to 'fail and keep flying.' Which topic shared today gave you the biggest relief—ocean crossings, battery safety, or storm tracking? Share your thoughts below!"

Another wonderful presentation. Thank you all. Will be adding this to my list to review again. I no longer have any social media so I am glad things are posted here and via podcast. Appreciate the trains comparison . I love trains but yet I still tense up during any amount of chop on a plane. Thanks to Janice and Barry for sharing their experiences. My next long haul is coming up in December so prepping well in advance.

Really like this format! You covered a lot. Would be nice if you did a live at some point where people could submit questions somehow.
