Punxutawney Phil's predictions are only 39% correct, but that's only because we're reading it backwards. If seeing his shadow meant an early Spring, and a cloudy day meant 6 more weeks of winter, he'd be right 61% of the time, and I'll stack that up against my weatherman who couldn't predict a thunderstorm if he got struck by lightning.

Our weather predictions used to be pretty good for the next 24 hours, then about 80% accurate for the next two days. Nowadays I keep track and accuracy is worse than 10 years ago here, who knows why. For example, they got the daily high and low temperature wrong by over 5 degrees every day; one day they predicted 5 feet of snow in 24 hours, we got zero. This Friday they said we'd get 1 inch of snow, we got none.

I've always lived in the South and I can remember how exciting it was just to see snow flurries! Even more rare were the few times it actually stuck to the ground. I have pictures of me several decades ago, standing beside a tiny snowman- maybe 18 inches high. Being in Savanah, Georgia, we had used quite a bit of the snow available! Now that we are in Florida, it's even more rare, but that just makes it all the more fun! PS as a Floridian, I am VERY thankful for the advances in weather studies. Tracking hurricanes saves lives down here!

February 2010 and December 2009 are both permanently in my brain. I grew up in northern Virginia, and both snowstorms pretty much brought daily life to a stop. I was in third grade that year and have a distinct memory of the county extending the school day by ten or fifteen minutes to make up for lost instruction time because we were out of school for a solid week for both storms. I remember being out during recess in mid-March and there still being massive piles of snow everywhere.

It’s raining here in SoCal but nothing has happened at our house. Re the video, History Guy, in Eric Larson’s book “Isaac’s Storm” part of the problem was the forecasters at the time would not take the weather forecasts seriously that were predicted by their counterparts from Cuba. If they had, lives may have been saved.

My favorite joke about the weather did I make is when someone asked me how's the weather? I would say ,"I trust the politicians before I trust the weatherman"

Seattle acts like it's the end of the world if there are two inches of snow on the ground, I can't even imagine how San Franciscans react, nowadays!

Something you might be interested in doing in a few years. A little-known suburb called Jimboomba had its first ever tornado. The suburb in Qld Australia is 1 hr south of Brisbane. The tornado formed in Flagstone on the outer rim of Jimboomba and then tracked east over Tamborine Mountain and through to the Gold Coast suburb of Helensvale.

Blizzard of 78, 30 inches of snow in Indianapolis in January. Remember it well, wind chill -50 and drifts in my driveway 10'.
