Cyclone Freddy's odyssey continues as it marauds through the Indian Ocean, and is now 1300 kilometers from Rodrigues. The storm is set to close in on the Mascarene islands over the weekend and arrive in Madagascar early next week, and may still be a major hurricane equivalent cyclone by then. Storm force winds are set to impact Mauritius, Réunion, and eastern Madagascar, with high rain rates and accumulations possible.

Freddy reached C5, the first one of 2023, per the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. It peaked with winds up to 165 Miles per hour (145 knots) (265 kilometers per hour) with a minimum central pressure of 918 millibars or hPa at 00Z on February 16. Edit: First I said 140 knots I meant 145 knots lol

This is a definition of a strong long live tropical cyclone in the form of Freddy, those island in the path and especially Madagascar you have time to prepare and to watch this storm closely.

I think it's pretty much set in stone now that Madagascar will see Freddy make landfall and with the good environmental conditions ahead I wouldn't be surprised if the landfall intensity and windspeeds are close to, if not actually at, those achieved by something like Batsirai (though of course no two storms are exactly alike). It's worth noting that with regards to the track the GFS has long had a notable poleward bias. What a very fascinating high ACE storm this has been to track.

Definitely turned into a Category 5! I saw the latest satellite images when they said it turned into a Category 5. The eye was pretty advanced. Hopefully, the storm will weaken even more..

Oh god thats bad. After will it head straight towards Mozambique? That would make it a very rare storm, making a feat not seen in 23 years - going from Australia to Mozamnique. Terrifying.
