Madagascar reels from the deadly impact of Cyclone Gezani, which has claimed at least 60 lives and displaced thousands. Powerful winds of up to 250 km/h and torrential flooding have flattened homes, destroyed schools, and toppled trees across Toamasina and surrounding areas.
Drone footage from UNICEF shows entire neighborhoods destroyed, residents wading through floodwaters, and families carrying corrugated iron to rebuild makeshift shelters.
UNICEF’s Chief of Emergency, Gillian Walker, warned: “The damage is quite significant… Safe drinking water is a huge concern… many communities remain cut off.”
Nearly 470,000 people have been affected, with 16,000 displaced, and aid agencies are urging an urgent scale-up of humanitarian assistance to prevent further suffering.
