The Mozambique army has been busy rescuing hundreds of flood victims from the swollen Zambezi River.

One of those rescued was a two-week-old baby.

A soldier from the Mozambican army carried the infant through chest high flood waters to a waiting helicopter.

Other flood victims waded through the deep water with whatever possessions they could carry, waving and shouting, desperate to be rescued.

The soldiers are airlifting villagers from Chinde and Mopeia to dry land in Marromeu.

Mozambique hoped at least 500 people could be evacuated by helicopters on Friday.

The flooded Zambezi River continues to rise, threatening thousands of people taking refuge on small islands of dry land that are rapidly shrinking.

At least 52 people have died in the floods, which began early this year.

Mozambican officials say 81-thousand have lost their homes.

A cargo plane from the South African air force arrived at Beira airport on Friday afternoon and delivered equipment before heading back to Pretoria.

Four helicopters and three planes from South Africa were expected to arrive later in the day to be used in the evacuation operation.

South African officials are meeting with Mozambican authorities to decide where the focus of the effort should be.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"All we can talk about is the people who have been rescued and their needs, which are great. The camps I was in today, there was no clean water, there was no latrines. You have ten thousand people with no latrines, there's going to be a serious health problem at some point. So for that reason we're moving in exactly water sanitation material, tents, jerrycans, everything they need."
