Million Homes Destroyed by Hurricane Simon, Rachel! Storm Surge Devastating Mexico
Hurricane Simon, a tropical cyclone that underwent unprecedented explosive intensification over anomalies of ultra-warm sea surface temperatures in the Eastern Pacific, has established a sprawling, destructive footprint extending from the coastal heights of Guerrero to the marshy lowlands of Nayarit. In the mountainous interior of Michoacán, small agricultural communities are facing a severe crisis. The local river networks, which feed into the massive Balsas River basin, experienced immediate flash-flooding as mountain rainfall totals climbed toward 20 inches (51 cm). As a result, over 12 isolated communities are currently cut off from all land communication, leaving them dependent on aerial rescue operations that are currently hindered by severe wind shear and zero-visibility conditions. To the south of the port city lies the expansive Cuyutlán Lagoon. As storm surge waters pushed through the narrow marine inlets, the lagoon’s water level rose at a rate of 15 centimeters per hour. Puerto Vallarta’s iconic oceanfront boardwalk, the Malecón, was transformed into a high-energy marine zone. Because the Bahia de Banderas acts as a funnel for ocean swells arriving from the southwest, the storm surge inside the bay was amplified by severe wave action. Waves exceeding 18 feet (5.5 meters) crashed over the concrete pedestrian plazas, tearing away bronze sculptures, destroying historic balustrades, and shattering the glass facades of oceanfront restaurants and retail boutiques. The former prison colony turned environmental reserve of Las Islas Marías absorbed a direct hit from Hurricane Simon’s core. The archipelago experienced the maximum hydrodynamic forces of the ocean surge, with waves estimated at over 22 feet (6.7 meters) striking the rocky shores and port facilities. Meanwhile, The landscape of the Baja California Peninsula has been profoundly reshaped over the last 48 hours. What began as a menacing Category 3 hurricane out in the Pacific Ocean made a historic, destructive landfall in northern Baja California over the weekend. Emergency dispatchers handled more than 4,000 emergency calls to C5, leading to over 200 high-risk water rescues as overflowing rivers swept through urban neighborhoods and rural settlements alike. The flash flood tore directly through an informal settlement, obliterating at least 10 homes. The Ensenada General Hospital suffered severe internal flooding. Muddy water breached the facility's lower levels, filling the emergency rooms, operating theaters, and ground-floor hospitalization wards. The border metropolis of Tijuana faced widespread urban chaos. The city’s complex, steep topography makes it notoriously vulnerable to mudslides and structural runoffs during sudden precipitation events. In the state capital of Mexicali, Rachel’s remnants triggered a rare and volatile combination of severe electrical storms and tropical downpours.

It must be devastating the shores of Mexico. Large hurricanes have been just offshore of Mexico for days and it is the bad side of the storm too. Can't we get any reporting on the news about it?

At 23:55 - Decades of accumulated debris closed up the storm drain system. So sad.
