CYCLONE FREDDY RECORDS
Cyclone Freddy holds the record as the longest-lasting cyclone in human recorded history! It is now running 37 days and still plenty of energy left to go another few days. Hurricane John in the Pacific held that record in 1994 at 31 days.
Cyclone Frreddy also holds the record for the all-time highest accumulated cyclone energy of a tropical cyclone worldwide, with an ACE of 84, breaking the former record of 82, set by Hurricane Ioke in 2006.
Additionally, Freddy was the first tropical cyclone to undergo seven separate rounds of rapid intensification. Prior to Freddy, no storm in the Southern hemisphere had rapidly intensified more than three times.
When we said it is going to be something else, it indeed ended up being "something else".
Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) is a metric used to express the energy released by a tropical cyclone during its lifetime.
Dangerous flooding is likely because soils along Freddy’s expected path are already saturated from flooding rains brought by January’s Tropical Cyclone Chenesco. Chensco stalled off the west coast of the island and brought torrential rains Jan. 19-21 that killed 33 people, left 20 missing, and made 34,000 people homeless. In addition, the flood damage potential for Freddy is higher than for storms in previous decades, because of the considerable deforestation Madagascar has experienced over the past 20 years: Madagascar lost 24% of its forest cover between 2000 and 2020, according to globalforestwatch.org. Madagascar is quite mountainous, so deforestation allows floodwaters to build up to higher heights, run off more quickly, and cause greater damage.
