In the early hours of June 1944, the success or failure of the Allied invasion of Normandy rests not only on soldiers, ships, and aircraft — but on the weather. Hidden away in scattered offices across Britain, a small team of meteorologists races to predict a brief break in the Atlantic storms battering the English Channel. Their forecast will decide whether Operation Overlord goes ahead, is delayed, or collapses before it even begins. @focusfeatures @studiocanal

Hats off to the Pressure marketing team for a brilliant move. Sponsoring the creation of this video puts their movie in front of the exact audience they want, in a way that we really appreciate.

Something else critical about the weather not mentioned in the video -- the Axis forces, with less accurate weather data, predicted heavy storms would last for over two weeks. As a result, a large portion of the garrison was given leave time, officers relocated to participate in war games, and Erwin Rommel returned to Berlin to meet with high command. June 6th may not have been the meteorological ideal, but meteorology made it the IDEAL time for the invasion.

I was a US Air Force weather forecaster for decades. I have looked - closely - at the raw, hand-plotted weather charts Col. Stagg used to forecast the weather for D-Day. I also taught operational weather forecasting for many years. Still further, I was stationed in East Anglia for many years, and I am quite familiar with the weather patterns for England, and northern Europe in general. I would not have forecast the clearing that Col. Stagg did. It was just a SMALL area of high pressure, and clearing skies, and a SLIGHT lessening of the seas. Pretty remarkable.
