Drama and testimonies of survivors of climate change in Mozambique,

The first cyclone to hit Mozambique occurred in 2019. Cyclone Idai, generated by a tropical depression, caused floods that claimed hundreds of lives and injured more than 111 people. More than 5,756 homes were destroyed and another 15,467 were seriously damaged. Hundreds of people, including children, the elderly and the disabled, were left homeless. Cyclonic phenomena are not exclusive to Mozambique, but for the country, the 2019 disaster was a special event, as, for the first time in its history, Mozambique was struggling with the effects of climate change. After the devastation of Cyclone Idai, in the same year of 2019, the country suffered again with Cyclone Kenneth, which also claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands of people homeless in northern and central Mozambique.

In 2021, two years after the passage of both elements, the same areas were hit again by another cyclone, which led to a real tragedy. The victims of the cyclones have still not been able to recover from the previous ones. Many people still do not have access to food, shelter or medical care and, above all, thousands of children and women are at risk of the rapid spread of infections and pandemic diseases such as malaria and cholera. They are among the greatest threats, especially due to the crowding of victims in refugee camps. In 2023, the same people who suffered the previous cyclones were affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which hit the region in February and March. The disaster comes just one year after Tropical Cyclone Gombe brought torrential rains and winds of 165 km/h, with gusts exceeding 200 km/h, leaving devastation and deaths in the region.

The long-lasting storm caused catastrophic damage and a humanitarian crisis in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, leaving more than 1,500 dead and many missing.
