Nearly a hundred people are confirmed dead in Malawi after cyclone Freddy slammed into southeastern Africa with torrential rain and high winds.
This is the second time in a month that Freddy has made landfall in southern Africa, having earlier struck Madagascar. It is one of the strongest and longest-lasting storms to ever be recorded in the southern hemisphere.

Sure it is. Madagascar has been virtually denuded. Once lush forests have been clear-cut. The process of desertification has devastating millions of acres...not due to climate change but due to the human land clearing. The UN has done everything to stop it. Theses people won't listen. Ignorance has devastated Madagascar. No one but the population...a population that has tripled in 40 years. Why is this important. Because those forests would have caused the storm to weaken greatly. Storms thrive where temperature differentials are great. Those cloud tops are minus 60 to 80 F. The ground is 100F. If the forests were present the ground would be 30 to 40 degrees cooler. That reduced differential along with wind friction with the canopy straps away a storms power. The benefit is that with reduced power comes much needed rain. Madagascar got none of it. And the storm then hit the mainland having lost little strength. These are the actual facts...not the drivel presented here.
