Cyclone Idai Survivors: Two (2) Years Later.
Descrição
In March 2019, southern Africa was hit by a tropical cyclone, rated amongst the worst ever experienced on the continent.
Cyclone Idai left a trail of devastation and killed at least 1,300 people in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi.
In Zimbabwe, the storm affected more than 270 000 people leaving 341 dead and many others missing. 17 608 households were left homeless.
Survivors in Zimbabwe are still living in tents and temporary shelters provided by humanitarian agencies and are desperate to move out into permanent structures they have been promised by the government.
Road infrastructure was grossly damaged with above 90% of road networks in Chimanimani and Chipinge destroyed. Landslides destroyed 584 km of roads. Almost all bridges in Chimanimani District were swept away rendering the area inaccessible. However, a lot of effort has been made to repair the bridges and roads that are now in a good condition.
In terms of relocating people, 220 internally displaced households are going to be resettled at West End farm an area close to Nhedziwa Business Centre, some 50 kilometres from Chimanimani. 55 housing units from the targeted 220 have been constructed and Government is targeting to have completed 105 housing units by the end of June 2021.
