Cyclone Freddy has returned and hit Malawi and Mozambique with renewed vigor
Descrição
#CycloneFreddy has returned and hit #Malawi and #Mozambique with renewed vigor.
#Cyclone Freddy has returned to the southern Africa's mainland for the second time in a month. The cyclone reached landlocked Malawi early on Monday morning after hitting Mozambique over the weekend.
The #storm bringing strong #winds and torrential #rain, causing roads #flooding and power outages in the hardest-hit areas. Videos on social media showed torrential rain swept away thousands of homes and uprooted trees, leaving residents at the huge ravines in the roads and having to clamber across makeshift bridges as the rain continued.
Most of the houses in the area are built with mud bricks, making them easily susceptible to damage under severe weather. Almost 60,000 people have been affected, of which about 19,000 were displaced from their homes, local authorities said.
Freddy is the strongest tropical cyclone on record and could also be the longest-lasting one, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
On Sunday, the storm struck Mozambique as a cyclone for the second time in a less than a month after battering the island nation of #Madagascar in the #IndianOcean. It has been difficult to determine the extent of the damage caused in Mozambique, as power supply and phone signals were cut off in some parts of the affected areas.
