Cyclone disaster and our humanitarian response
Descrição
The dire situation is a direct result of the devastation caused by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which hit central and northern Mozambique. The two storms caused widespread flooding, the destruction of almost 780,000 hectares (7,800 km²) of agricultural crops and the displacement of tens of thousands of families.
The number of children under five facing “critical” levels of food insecurity is expected to rise to 200,000 in the areas affected by the storms in the coming years. More than 38,000 children could become severely malnourished and at risk of death in the same period. "The agricultural devastation caused by the two cyclones has further exacerbated already high levels of child malnutrition," "Many children in disaster-affected areas do not have access to the nutritious food they need for their healthy development. The prospect of further suffering is very real as we approach the lean season. More resources are urgently needed to support ongoing humanitarian efforts."
Our First Mission
In 2019, through a support project we set up with the help of the Camões Institute in Prague, we were able to bring food aid and essential products to victims of Cyclones Idai and Keneth.
This was a successful activity, as we were able to alleviate the suffering of several affected families.
Our Second Mission
In 2021, we returned to Mozambique a week after Cyclone Eloise hit the central region again in February 2021 and, once again, it was a success, because with the help of generous people who supported us and joined the cause with donations, we were able to build 46 houses this year, 2 small schools with their respective school supplies, provide food and medical assistance to more than 70 families, create agricultural projects in the affected areas and much more.
Our project does not stop here; we continue to dream of continuing to help these people by building more houses, helping with medical treatment, food, sanitation and education for children and women. We also dream of creating self-sustainability projects for the victims in the near future, since most of them have lost everything and need to start over from scratch.
Everything we have done so far is not enough, as the problems of the victims tend to get worse. Therefore, it would be a great achievement for these people to be able to count on your support.
