Cyclone Dikeledi sweeps past Mayotte and Comoros

Cyclone Dikeledi made landfall yesterday in northern Madagascar with hurricane force winds, and has weakened slightly today as it sweeps past Mayotte and the Comoros, delivering rounds of heavy rainfall and strong winds of up to 70 miles per hour (110kph).

The storm is expected to pass very close to Nampula province in eastern Mozambique, with a landfall possible. Dikeledi may also restrengthen back to hurricane status by the time it gets there. However, land interaction will be a key issue regarding the future of the storm, with much more intensification likely if the storm grazes Mozambique without making landfall.

The forecast beyond the next couple of days is very uncertain, with models split between acceleration beyond southern Madagascar, and the storm stalling and having an erratic track around the Mozambique Channel.

Rainfall totals could exceed 300mm in parts of Nampula province in Mozambique, as well as southwestern Madagascar this week.
