An AK-47 on their flag

Mozambique's flag shows a rifle, a book and a hoe on a yellow star in a red triangle: education, farming and defence. The party that took power at independence in 1975 designed it, and the rifle has been there since day one. A 2005 competition to design a new flag drew 169 entries, but Parliament voted 155 to 79 to keep it.
