20,000+ People Displaced by Tropical Cyclone Freddy

Descrição

Tropical Cyclone Freddy has left widespread damage and destruction on the eastern coast of Africa this week, with at least 219 people having died as a result of the storm since March 11, per the AP.

199 of those people were located in Malawi. As many as 20,000 people in Malawi are estimated to be displaced as a result of the cyclone as well.

There is widespread consensus among experts that the climate crisis is making extreme weather phenomena, like hurricanes and cyclones, both more prevalent and more intense.

According to the AP, Freddy has intensified a record 7 times over its month-long existence and ‘has the highest-ever recorded accumulated cyclone energy, or ACE, which is a measurement of how much energy a cyclone has released over time.’ The amount of energy caused by Freddy alone has been more than the cumulative energy of an entire Atlantic hurricane season.

This is heartbreaking. I know Cyclone Freddy struck twice, as well as lingering over the water between the continent and Madagascar. Despite everything else that's happening on the planet, I hope the UN and other organizations can reach these people with aid and help rebuilding. My heart goes out to these people. 💜🙏🌍
