WWII Archives in Color: Allied vs. German Research. Peenemünde's Buzz Bombs, Spitfires & Tempests

This restored and colorized archival documentary examines a defining chapter of mid-century aerial warfare and aeronautical engineering: the operational history of the Fieseler Fi 103—widely known as the V-1 flying bomb—alongside the extensive German scientific research network that underpinned its creation.

The film opens in June 1944 during the eighty-day V-1 siege of London and southern England. As pilotless pulsejet missiles launched across the Channel day and night, civilian communities and emergency rescue squads endured relentless bombardment that destroyed 23,000 buildings, damaged a million homes, and claimed over 5,000 lives. In response, Allied forces organized an integrated defense grid along the southern coast. Anti-aircraft artillery crews downed more than 1,500 missiles, steel-cable barrage balloons snared nearly 300, and high-speed fighter pilots flying the Hawker Tempest, North American P-51 Mustang, and late-mark Supermarine Spitfire intercepted nearly 2,000 buzz bombs in mid-air. In total, fifty percent of the 8,000 V-1 launches were neutralized before Britain mobilized 100,000 workers to rebuild damaged infrastructure ahead of winter.

The second section transitions inside Germany’s aeronautical research institutions to document how engineers studied propulsion, structural mechanics, and avionics. Footage from engine laboratories and the Stuttgart research institute highlights single-cylinder combustion studies, multi-cylinder endurance runs, and high-altitude environmental test benches simulating thin, supercooled stratospheric air. At the Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Luftfahrt (DVL), material scientists conduct tensile measurements, multi-million-cycle fatigue bending, optical photoelastic stress analysis, fuselage skin buckling, landing gear drop tests, 800-frames-per-second destructive propeller spin trials, and seaplane float impact simulations. Further segments examine aviation meteorology in Braunschweig and radio direction-finding and blind-landing instrumentation in Oberpfaffenhofen.

The final reel presents captured 1942–1943 classified film from Peenemünde, detailing Fi 103 assembly, Schmidt-Argus pulsejet reed-valve inspections, Walter catapult ramp launches, aerial drop trials from beneath a Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor, phototheodolite tracking, and early aerodynamic crashes into the Baltic Sea.
