Ordnance.com would like to thank the guys over at Vega Ballistics for allowing us to get the footage of the firearm operations (listed below), as well as a round being fired at the range. Sequential operations performed in the video: 1.) Remove muzzle brake cover 2.) Insert shoulder stock 3.) Insert 20×138mm armor-piercing cartridge into magazine 4.) Open bolt cover 5.) Use hand crank to retract bolt 6.) Squeeze lower grip to release bolt 7.) Insert magazine into receiver (bolt would have to be cycled again to chamber round, which is not shown) 8.) Adjust iron sight 9.) Disengage safety 10.) Squeeze trigger 11.) 💥 The Lahti L-39 is a Finnish 20mm anti-tank rifle used during the Second World War. It had excellent accuracy, penetration, and range, but its size made transportation difficult. It was nicknamed "Norsupyssy" ("Elephant Gun"), and as tanks developed armor too thick for the Lahti to penetrate, its uses switched to long range sniping, tank harassment and with the L-39/44 fully automatic variant, employment as an improvised anti-aircraft weapon. The gun was also widely used in the "cold Charlie" counter-sniper technique, where the Finns would use mannequins posing as sloppily-covered officers. Soviet snipers would fire upon the mannequins, and the Finns would then return fire at the Soviet snipers with Lahti L-39s.

🇫🇮 Lahti L-39 — “Norsupyssy” * Country: Finland * Designer: Aimo Lahti * Introduced: 1939 * Role: 20 mm anti-tank rifle / anti-materiel rifle * Caliber: 20×138mmB * Action: Gas-operated, semi-automatic * Magazine: 10 rounds * Length: ~2.2 m * Weight: ~49.5 kg 💀 * Barrel: ~1.3 m * Muzzle velocity: roughly 800 m/s 🇷🇺 Used against the Soviets It was developed by Finland around the start of the Winter War and saw extensive service during the Continuation War against the Soviet Union. It was originally intended primarily to attack armored vehicles. But here’s the crazy part: as Soviet tanks got thicker armor, the L-39 became less useful as a tank killer. Finnish troops then used it for long-range precision fire, attacking machine-gun positions, bunkers and light vehicles, among other roles. 🎯 Why people call it a “20mm sniper” It wasn’t technically a conventional sniper rifle. It was an anti-tank rifle that could be used for long-range precision fire. Its size, powerful cartridge, and accuracy made it useful in that role. Finnish soldiers nicknamed it “Norsupyssy”, meaning “Elephant Gun.” And at nearly 50 kg, the name checks out 😭. Only around 1,900 were produced, making it a pretty rare historical weapon.
