Why the Deep Forests of Madagascar Are So Hard to Explore

01/11/2026 · Why Wilderness

Descrição

Why are the deep forests of Madagascar so hard to explore? Its most famous animals are lemurs the size of a house cat — yet razor-sharp stone forests, roads of red mud, plague, cyclones and animals that almost never show themselves keep much of this island unexplored.

We cross the Tsingy de Bemaraha, drive the RN5 in the wet season, meet Brookesia nana, mouse lemurs, the fossa and the aye-aye, follow Cyclones Batsirai and Freddy, and look back at the elephant birds Madagascar has already lost.
