EXPOSED: Tribalism in Africa: How It Started and Why It Still Hurts Today

Descrição

What if Africans did not wake up one day hating each other by tribe?
What if tribalism was not African culture—but something created on purpose?
Before colonization, African societies lived like neighborhoods. Communities were connected by language, family, trade, and shared land. Great kingdoms like Mali, Songhai, Oyo, Ashanti, Kongo, and Ethiopia ruled over many groups living together. Disagreements existed, but no group believed it was born superior to another.
Everything changed between 1884 and 1885, when European powers divided Africa at the Berlin Conference, without a single African present. To control the continent, colonial governments used division—favoring some communities and excluding others. In Nigeria, British indirect rule after 1914 deepened regional divisions. In Rwanda, policies in the 1930s turned flexible identities into rigid labels.
While Africans were divided, resources like gold, cocoa, rubber, and labor were exported out of the continent. When independence came between 1957 and the mid-1970s, power was often left in the hands of a few groups, with colonial borders unchanged.
This video reveals how modern tribalism was born—not from African tradition, but from colonization—and why understanding this history matters today.
