Why Portugal Held on for SO LONG: The Fall of an Empire

19/09/2026 · The Front

Descrição

Portugal was a small country with a global empire, and in Africa, that empire became its lifeline… and eventually its downfall.

This video follows Portugal’s rise from early Atlantic exploration and coastal forts to a hardened colonial system built on extraction, forced labor, and the slave trade.

This is the story of how Portugal built an empire in Africa, and why it couldn’t survive the modern world.

Portugal had essentially won in Angola and Mozambique. Guinea was their only issue.

With Macau in 1999, Portugal was the last European country to give up a *real colony. _*I know that there are still European countries with overseas territories._

Fun fact: the alliance between Portugal and England is the longest, ongoing alliance in documented history, going strong since the 14th century

And yet, the Portuguese Empire fell only 26 years ago

"Freshly renamed Istanbul" (when referring to the fall of Constantinople) calling it Istanbul is utterly historically false, following the ottoman conquest it remained under the name Constantinople (Konstantiniyye in turkish) for another 500 years until 1930 when it was renamed to istanbul. Hope this was a misktake and not historical revisionism.

You forgot to cover Goa in India and Macau in the Far East.

Portugal must return to the world with its own strategy that's the path for the sucess again.

Istanbul was only renamed in 1923. Do your research please

This is very misleading, like most images shown the story is based in other colonial powers, must of the 400 years of Portuguese presence in Africa Améria and Asia where based in trade, mostly the presence was limited to costal trading harbours.
