Tropical Cyclone Pabuk (36W) Storm Usman has wreaked havoc over Philippines around New Year’s Eve, claiming over 64 lives and resulting in widespread destruction. Thereafter, the system weakened into a depression and moved into the South China Sea where it once again picked up pace, becoming a Cyclonic Storm Pabuk yet again on Thursday.
The cyclonic storm “PABUK” over the South China Sea has moved west-northwestwards during past 24 hours, making landfall in Southern Thailand and is now picking up speed over water as it is entering the Andaman Sea, the conditions seem favorable in terms of heat potential to intensify the strength of the storm. it will then move towards north and reach Port Blair by January 6
Here is the latest report from the IMD - India Meteorological Department. The cyclonic storm “PABUK” over Gulf of Thailand & neighborhood moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 17kmph in past 06 hours.
Pabuk is currently over the Andaman Sea & neighborhood about 650km east-southeast of Port Blair. It is forecast to move northwestwards and cross Andaman Islands around the evening of Jan 6th as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph.
It is forecasted to move north-northwestwards and then re-curve northeastwards towards Myanmar coast and weaken gradually during January 7th-8th, 2019
Heavy rainfall at many places as well as at isolated places between 64.5 –115.5 mm over Andaman Islands from the evening of January 5th. Intensity is very likely to increase with heavy to very heavy rainfall 115.6–204.4 mm on 6th and 7th over Andaman Islands.
Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is likely to prevail over Andaman Islands, Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of east central and southeast Bay of Bengal from the 5th evening to 7th morning. The sea condition will be high over Andaman Islands, Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of east central and southeast Bay of Bengal from the evening of 5th till the morning of 7th.
Total suspension of fishing operation over Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast and east central Bay of Bengal during 5th-7th January and over east central & adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal on 8th
The strong winds are forecast with waves up to 3-5 meters high of both the Gulf and in the Andaman Sea.
