Descrição

🇲🇿 On October 19, 1986, Mozambique’s first president, Samora Machel, boarded a plane to return home.

He never made it.

Machel had risen through FRELIMO, the movement that fought Portuguese colonial rule, and became Mozambique’s first president after independence in 1975.

But his government also supported liberation movements fighting white-minority rule elsewhere in southern Africa, putting Mozambique at odds with apartheid South Africa.

Then came the night that would change Mozambique.

Machel’s Soviet-built Tupolev Tu-134 went off course and crashed near Mbuzini, South Africa.

Machel and 24 others were killed.

South Africa’s official inquiry attributed the crash to errors by the flight crew.

Soviet investigators disputed that conclusion and argued that a false navigational beacon could have diverted the aircraft.

Years later, South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission examined the case and said it could not conclusively determine the cause.

Nearly four decades later, the controversy surrounding Machel’s death has never completely disappeared.

Was it simply a tragic aviation accident — or is there still something we don’t know?
