We Nearly Lost the Big One | Mozambique's Flooded Backroads

06/09/2026 · Sunset Tribe Adventures

Descrição

Mozambique had other plans for us.

We set off from Barra with two big goals: reach the remote Banhine National Park and then push west towards the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park. But after an incredible amount of rain, the roads were flooded, rivers were rising and tracks that should have been passable had turned into deep mud and water.

What followed was one of the toughest — and most memorable — adventures we’ve taken on.

From Inhambane and Maxixe, we headed inland through Funhalouro and towards Banhine, only to find the park surrounded by water. From there, we pushed towards Mapai, tackled flooded roads and river crossings, crossed into Zimbabwe and made our way through Gonarezhou and Bubi towards Lion and Elephant.

Along the way there were some serious moments. We pushed vehicles through water deeper than we’re normally comfortable with, encountered trucks completely stranded in the mud, and even had a recovery go horribly wrong when a snatch rope broke and sent a D-ring flying straight through the back of Theo’s Land Cruiser.

It was wet. It was muddy. At times, it was properly shit.

But these are the trips that make the best stories.

A massive thank you to our sponsors, Bosch Auto Service Centre Menlyn and All In 4x4, for helping keep our vehicles prepared and ready for these adventures.

This is Mozambique after the rains. This is Sunset Tribe.

Logged off Netflix to YouTube, this popped up and we decided to watch while dining. The best decision ever, didn't want it to end and constantly worried about the Nissan at every crossing 😂

No good deed ever goes unpunished. But it still looked like one hellova adventure. So sorry to see the Cruiser take that hit. Great call on the barge.

Lekker trip. 1. Ry maar altyd n brandstof filter saam indien nood aanvullings uit coke bottels gedoen moet word. As jy nie het nie, gebruik enigiets as n filter, al is dit koffie filter. Jul is bevoorreg

I feel sorry for you chaps... Did that exact route 3 x now and the 4th time comes in March 2027 - Weather permitting - But than again, after 39 years of touring Southern Africa, I've learned something. Oh and speaking Portuguese would have also helped when planning. My respect for you. One thing I learned early on was: There is a fine line between enjoyable adventure and expensive stupidity. Ask me all about it... Nice video 👍 Thanks for the share 👃
