TROPICAL CYCLONE CHIDO & HEAT WAVE UPDATE | 11 - 14 December 2024
Descrição
🌀Tropical Cyclone Chido🌀
Tropical Storm Chido strengthened into a TROPICAL CYCLONE overnight into Wednesday and is now located approximately 1000 km north of Mauritius, with wind speeds of around 150 km/h over the ocean. Forecast models predict the cyclone will continue moving westward, making landfall in Madagascar by Friday as a TROPICAL CYCLONE. This system is expected to bring heavy rainfall exceeding 150mm to northeastern Madagascar, potentially causing flooding, along with strong winds and rough seas.
Chido is forecast to cross the Mozambique Channel, weakening back to a tropical storm before reaching northern Mozambique by Sunday. Heavy rain, rough seas, and strong winds are expected, but the exact time and location of landfall remain uncertain. Current models suggest landfall between Pemba and Nacala on Sunday.
⚠ Some weather models suggest the possibility of Chido affecting northeastern South Africa, but it is too early to confirm. We will monitor the situation and provide regular updates.

HEAT WAVE conditions are set to persist:
Northern Cape: until Wednesday
Eastern Cape: until Thursday
KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, and Free State: until at least Friday
⛈ Isolated to scattered thunderstorms may provide some relief from the heat in northeastern South Africa during the week. However, severe storms with hail, lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds are likely due to extreme heat and atmospheric instability.

Chido has currently increased to the highest grading for a South-West Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclone, Very Intense Tropical Cyclone (VITC) with winds reaching over 250kmh. That is similar to a high intensity Cat 4/5 hurricane🌀It will be reaching Mayotte and the Comoros islands as a Tropical Cyclone (Cat 3 hurricane) square on Saturday, the 14th of December. A storm surge of 8m (26ft) is predicted. 😢
