Thousand Restaurant Destroyed by Hurricane Rachel! Giant Waves Devastating Mexico

Hurricane Rachel has defied early statistical forecasting models by undergoing a second phase of rapid intensification within the last 14 hours. A major storm surge strikes Mexico's Pacific coast. At the prominent cape of Cabo Corrientes, the oceanic energy is immense. The storm's eastern eyewall is passing just offshore, pushing a massive wall of water directly into the mouth of Banderas Bay. In Puerto Vallarta, the famous tourist Malecón (boardwalk) has been completely breached. Waves are crashing directly into the second-story balconies of hotels, restaurants, and shops. In the rural sectors of the municipality, such as Tomatlán and Boca de Tomatlán, small fishing villages nestled in coves have been almost completely submerged by the surge. Residents were evacuated via military transport trucks just hours before the ocean cut off the main access roads. in Manzanillo, Colima, one of Latin America's busiest commercial shipping hubs, the storm surge has effectively shut down international trade operations. The interior lagoons (Cuyutlán and San Pedrito), which form the backbone of the port’s geography, are experiencing historic high-water marks. Along the tourist strips of Miramar, Santiago, and Las Brisas, the destruction to local infrastructure is severe. Dozens of traditional beachfront palapas (open-air restaurants) have been wiped clean off their foundations. The powerful backwash of the surge has stripped away millions of cubic meters of sand, undermining the foundations of multi-story boutique hotels and luxury condominiums. The main coastal boulevard (Boulevard Miguel de la Madrid) is currently impassable, covered under a foot of heavy marine sediment, rocks, and twisted rebar. Although Hurricane Rachel remains well south of Sonora, its massive size and wide wind field are causing an environmental crisis further north in the Gulf of California. The coastal plains of Sonora, particularly around Guaymas, Empalme, and Huatabampo, are still reeling from the devastating impact of Hurricane Polo, which hit the region earlier this week.

Thank you for the video of your beautiful gardens and landscapes. You have quite a wonderful variety of animals at the zoo and they all look healthy and well taken care of. May you continue to have success with your zoo and continue to educate the children on the importance of animals in our world.
