The Journey of the Supercomputer - UK Weather - Met Office Explains

30/10/2026 · Met Office - UK Weather

Descrição

Behind every weather forecast lies a machine so powerful it can run more calculations in a second than millions of humans could do in a lifetime.

In this video, Honor Criswick takes us inside the Met Office’s groundbreaking cloud-based supercomputer, revealing how it’s transforming the way we predict the weather and understand our changing climate. From the early days of hand-drawn charts and pen-and-paper equations, to today’s cutting-edge cloud technology powered by Microsoft Azure, discover how this leap in computing is helping meteorologists see further, faster, and with greater accuracy than ever before.

In early days, rain before seven, fine before eleven. I could listen to Honor for hours.

I went to a talk when the Met office was in Bracknell where I learned that the first UK electronic computer forecast was done using time on the Lyons Bakery Computer in London. In 1951 Lyons had bought one of the first computers in the UK to process orders and accounts. J. Lyons & Co. was Britain’s largest catering company, with restaurants and cafés all over the country as well interests in food manufacturing and outside catering. These days it is a bit different, but no free cakes and pies for the Met Office staff when they collect the results.

Amazing to see how far this has all come since my days of hand plotted charts and the early beginnings of computerisation in the late 70's, early 80's. Thanks Honor. Would really love the opportunity to visit and see first hand how it's all done now.
