Bail, But Not Free: Suliman Carrim Gets R100,000 Bail, But Stays Behind Bars

Suliman Carrim, arrested at OR Tambo with five bags and a flight to Dubai, has been granted R100,000 bail in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court, with 12 strict conditions: his passport stays with police until his Madlanga Commission testimony is finished, Monday-morning check-ins at a police station, and 48 hours for his lawyer to contact the commission. But he is not going home. He stays in custody because of a separate vehicle case in Musina, where his bail hearing is on Friday 30 October. On judgment morning the State also tried to reopen the bail case with "new information" about his wife's property and the Musina case. The magistrate dismissed it.

IMPORTANT: Suliman Carrim has not been convicted of anything. The commission charge and the Musina vehicle case are allegations he still has to answer; he has not pleaded in the Musina case. What he said at the Madlanga Commission is his version. The SIU probe is an investigation, not a charge. The two Musina co-accused are not named, and their guilty plea is expected, not done.
