The Free German Youth - Freie Deutsche Jugend

08/09/2026 · East Germany Investigated

Descrição

The FDJ was far more than a youth organization—it was an important part of everyday life and political education in the GDR. This video looks at its history, activities, ideology, and role in East German society.

Thanks to Paul Webster for his support and to a friend for using her FDJ membership pass shown in the video.

Could you make a video about disabled WW2 veterans lives in the DDR? Were they treated well?

I still remember being hyped during my last year in kindergarten that I will soon become a Pionier. Then the wall came down and my disappointment was immeasurable. Well according to my older siblings it was mostly a PITA so I probably dodged a bullet there. 😂

I can’t believe somebody created an organization modeled after that one IFA Wartburg Song.

Haha, that drawing at 9:36 ! I was lucky though. My teacher was visiting parents when I was in first grade. She wanted to know whatever or not I was going to join FDJ later on. That and several other things got me to the conclusion that I would never become a member; knowing full well that higher education would be blocked for me. The only path left would be "Fachabitur" after finishing an apprenticeship. Little did I know that I would be lucky in the end because the system itself failed.
