Talkernate History - Alternate African Decolonization
Descrição
In this episode we discuss the pivotal era where Africa transitioned from colonial domination, to independence. Why did it happen when it did? Could it have happened earlier or later? Which nations transitioned smoothly and which did so chaotically? What could have been done to alter their fates? Could colonies exist up to the modern era? We discuss these issues and more, with particular attention paid to nations like Ghana, Mozambique, Angola, The Belgian Congo, Algeria, and others.
Max also tells a *thrilling* story about getting his hair cut by a woman from South Sudan.
We were originally going to do a single Africa episode centered around the Cold War era, but there was just too much material to cover in one episode. We're tentatively planning to do three Africa episodes in 2023. They will not be sequential. The next episode in the queue will be another short story compilation

Kind of a weird video for a Sliders fan channel but I'll give it a watch.

Churchill once said of Charles de Gaulle: “He looks like a female llama who has just been surprised in her bath.”

40:33 Part of the problem with this hypothetical is that the Carnation Revolution happened in large part *because* of the colonial wars. Obviously there was already discontent with lack of political freedoms, economic stagnation, etc. but one big reason a lot of army personnel decided there was no more time to wait was just how adamant the government was on not giving up the colonies, and how little they seemed to care about the mounting casualties. For example, António de Spínola, a military governour of Guinea-Bissau who was by all means a supporter of the regime and of colonialism, often proposed ending the wars by granting greater autonomy or even federative status to the colonies - but was always rejected by the government, because they were ardently against giving the colonies any higher status (despite their own propaganda proclaiming each and every colony was an integral part of the country - obviously they were not treated as such).

Love that the map shown throughout has a glaring error with Spain for some reason owning Mauritania and France owning Western Sahara
