Somalia: the most hostile place in the world

19/10/2026 · Investigation

Descrição

For years, Somalia has allegedly served as a dumping ground for toxic waste from Western nations. In Puntland, hundreds are believed to have died from its devastating effects. Two Italian journalists who exposed this illegal trade were assassinated in 1994. Years later, a former Italian mafia member claimed he knew the truth behind the operation. This explosive investigation reveals the dark secrets behind one of the world’s most disturbing environmental scandals—and the hidden role of Western powers in Somalia’s ongoing tragedy.

This is what journalism means! I am truly and humbly grateful of all the amazing journalists who risked their lives or lost them to unveil such a horrific network of toxic waste trafficking.

I lived and worked in Moqdisho in 2013 - 2014. I managed to sneak around unnoticed as I am Kenyan and can pass for Somali. My host and friend who is Somali took me around. We had a few good meals and hangouts at Liddo Beach. I watched with amusement at how anyone walks around with AK47s like theyre shopping bags. The wealthier ones drive around escorted by a pickup truck with about 10gunmen to protect one person. It was almost impossible to spot a building in the city that wasn't pockmarked by bullet and mortar explosions. Very post apocalyptic. I bought a pair of sandals at the old market. They said " Made in Syria." I still have them to this date. Some surprises. There were no mosquitoes in the hot coastal city, but flies were plenty. There was a working city garbage service in operation. The place had the most delicious fruits in the world (watermelon, pineapple, bananas and oranges all taste like they've been dipped in sugar 😅) However my Somali friend told me clearly that if I was recognized to be a foreigner in Moqdisho I would be dead within the day. Whenever someone asked me anything in Somali language, he covered for me by quickly disrupting the conversation. 😅
