🌿 Dracaena stuckyi — Elephant Tusk Sansevieria
One of my favourite plants in my collection — and without a doubt, my favourite Sansevieria. ❤️🌿
Dracaena stuckyi is a fascinating species with thick, cylindrical leaves that can eventually become very tall and impressive. It is native to parts of eastern and southern Africa, including Sudan and northern Mozambique, and is adapted to hot, dry conditions.
This plant also has quite a story behind it.
Around 2023, I became determined to find a genuine Dracaena stuckyi in Europe. I searched everywhere, but couldn't find one available within the EU. One of the biggest problems is the enormous amount of misinformation surrounding these plants online. I don't believe most of it is intentional, but there are also nurseries and sellers advertising plants as D. stuckyi when they are actually Dracaena angolensis, formerly known as Sansevieria cylindrica.
Eventually, I found a supplier in Switzerland selling what appeared to be the genuine species. It was quite expensive for what was essentially just a cutting, but because I had searched for so long, I decided to take the chance and ordered it.
Then the parcel disappeared! 📦😳
The postal service eventually declared it lost, and I thought that was the end of the story. But two months later, the package finally arrived — and incredibly, the cutting was still alive! 😂
It had survived two months in the postal system with no proper care whatsoever. But that is Sansevieria for you — these plants can be unbelievably tough.
Since then, it has slowly established itself. It took quite a long time to produce roots and begin growing properly, and, as often happens with Sansevieria cuttings, it initially produced only juvenile leaves.
I then made the rather foolish decision to put it outside in an exposed position. During its first year there it suffered quite a lot of damage from the conditions. Fortunately, it has now stabilised and is producing new leaves again. 🌱
It is still growing in the same position for now, but I am planning to move it into my conservatory, where I hope it will continue to develop into the beautiful mature plant I've been waiting for.
After all the searching, the lost parcel, the two-month journey and several years of patience, this plant has become something rather special to me. ❤️
