Wednesday April 29, 2026 Daily Forecast Australia
Today's main weather story is a slight but notable shift in the east coast rainfall pattern, with light coastal showers now extending further south down the New South Wales coastline — reaching the Port Stephens Peninsula, Central Coast and as far south as Sussex Inlet through the afternoon and evening. This marks a change from the more northern focus of recent days.
In Western Australia, although the earlier severe thunderstorm warning has been cancelled, scattered showers and thunderstorms continue through the Goldfields, Midwest and Wheatbelt this morning, gradually easing into the afternoon. There is also some light coastal shower activity around Carnarvon through the afternoon. A weak low offshore is supporting residual instability and daytime heating is doing the rest — making storm development hit-and-miss across the southwest interior today.
Looking ahead, a low pressure system is forecast to track along the southern coast of Western Australia tomorrow evening, with closely packed isobars suggesting a noticeable increase in winds for Margaret River, Walpole, Albany, Bremer Bay and Esperance. This is one to watch and will be covered in detail in tomorrow's forecast.
Along the Queensland coast, moderate to fresh onshore winds and scattered coastal showers continue from Cooktown through Cairns, Townsville and Mackay, with strong wind warnings current for the Townsville, Mackay and Capricornia coasts, extending south through Hervey Bay, K'gari and the Sunshine Coast. Tasmania also has strong wind warnings current for the Channel, Lower East Coast, South East and South West coasts.
Temperatures today range from 34 degrees at Fitzroy Crossing down to 14 degrees in Hobart and parts of Tasmania's east coast. Adelaide reaches a pleasant 26 degrees and Melbourne 21.
Over the three-day outlook, the most significant rainfall signal is along the east coast, with Coffs Harbour, Lismore and areas north through Mackay, Cairns and Cape Tribulation potentially seeing in excess of 60mm from persistent coastal showers.
