Mexico Destroyed Today! Giant Waves Storm Boris Damaging Homes, Cars in Chiapas

19/10/2026 · Nature Damage

Descrição

A catastrophic coastal crisis is unfolding along the southern Pacific seaboard of Mexico as Tropical Storm Boris unleashes historic marine swells, violent rip currents, and massive storm surges. The shallow bathymetry of the Chiapas coastline compressed these deep-water waves, violently elevating their height just as they reached the shore, resulting in destructive breakers that far exceeded early seasonal forecasts. The marine impact has been felt most severely within the coastal municipality of Pijiapan, specifically targeting the tourist and residential sectors of Playa Grande and Costa Azul. Witnesses described waves peaking between 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) breaking far beyond the standard high-tide markers. The sheer mass of the incoming salt water breached sand dunes and retaining walls, flooding beachside roads and reaching several hundred meters inland into residential blocks. The municipality of Tonalá faces a dual threat. While local weather stations recorded a catastrophic accumulation of over 30 centimeters (12 inches) of rainfall, the coastal defense lines of its beachfront communities were simultaneously hammered by the storm surge. In Puerto Arista and Cabeza de Toro, the ocean surge pushed inland through estuaries and lagoons, causing brackish water to overflow into surrounding agricultural fields and low-lying residential settlements. Tropical Storm Boris made landfall along the coast of Guerrero in the early hours of Tuesday, June 9, drenching Acapulco and surrounding communities with heavy rain, gusty winds and the very real threat of life-threatening mudslides — a grim routine for a stretch of coastline that has absorbed blow after blow in recent years. Boris had been spinning near the Mexican coast for several days before finally moving ashore Tuesday morning. Along the central coast of Guerrero, including in Acapulco, forecasters had warned of 4 to 8 inches of rainfall, with a max of 15 inches in the hardest-hit areas. A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the coastal strip between Laguna de Chacahua in Oaxaca and Tecpan de Galeana in Guerrero — the zone forecasters identified as most vulnerable. According to AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva, flash flooding and mudslides from locally excessive rainfall are the main threats from both Boris and Cristina. For the communities of Guerrero and Oaxaca, this is not unfamiliar pain. In October 2023, Category 5 Hurricane Otis made landfall near Acapulco as the strongest landfalling hurricane on record in the eastern Pacific basin — causing at least 52 fatalities and an estimated $12 to $16 billion in damage, making it the costliest tropical cyclone in Mexico's recorded history. Otis knocked out power to over half a million homes and businesses across Guerrero, impacted more than 220,000 homes and damaged 80% of the area's hotels. Meanwhile, Streets and avenues in the Veracruz-Boca del Río metropolitan area were flooded Wednesday morning, June 10. Heavy rains during the early morning hours caused the flooding , which persisted until 8:00 a.m.
