There is very decent research done in the Netherlands on how to break a wave. A flat panel looks cheap but quickly erodes the base as the full force of the wave digs under the wall base. Capture and slowly release saves the wall for a tiny bit extra. Given that water is not going to go down in the next century, better fix those walls
