Cyclone Idai: The Night Beira Turned Into an Inland Sea

11/10/2026 · Earth Unbound

Descrição

Cyclone Idai was not just a storm on a weather map. In March 2019, it looped through the Mozambique Channel, intensified, and then smashed into Beira, central Mozambique, with estimated winds near 175 km/h. The impact did not end at landfall.

Storm surge and relentless rain transformed the Pungwe and Buzi river plains into an inland sea. Entire neighborhoods disappeared under water, roads were severed, and rescue teams could only reach many survivors by boat and helicopter. More than 1,000 people were reported killed across Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, and over 1.5 million people in Mozambique alone were affected.

As the water stagnated, a major cholera outbreak emerged, hitting people who had already lost homes, crops, and clean water. Cyclone Idai is now remembered as one of Africa’s worst weather disasters. Share this, and tell us what detail shocked you most.
