We are in Mozambique on The Sardine News' Plastic Fantastic Tour across Southern Africa.
We started in Botswana, at the Tsodilo Hills, or the Mountains of the Gods - to the San people. Where we collected LDPE beer wrappers that would have gone into the environment one way or the other.
With this waste plastic, we got stuck in and produced a marlin fishing lure, known as a Kona (they were first made and used in Hawaii). At the campfire.

And now in Vilankulos in Mozambique, we had the chance to try the Kona out. The jet head lure weighed just enough to keep it in the water but making a beautiful splash as it picked up water and air with it's concave face. The beer wrapper skirt was a bit thick and straight, but in the water it all came alive in the form of a bona fide and credible bait presentation. It was rigged with a ballyhoo, aka halfbeak, and to see what happened, watch the video!

Bazaruto Island and the waters around are magical, especially on a calm flat day like this was. We visit Sailfish Bay where we try for a surf.

And then on the long way home, Paradise Island, aka Ilha do Santa Caroliha, for some more snorkeling, a picnic, and a tour of yet another old hotel.

If you would like to join us on tour like this, please get in touch via http://thesardine.co.za or email Sean on [email protected], anytime.

There is a lot more information on recycling plastic at grassroots level, on The Sardine News too.
