Lan makes landfall, Hurricane Fernanda peaks - August 15, 2023

Typhoon Lan has finally made landfall in central Japan, striking Wakayama prefecture, and remains over the area at the time of tonight's bulletin. The storm has weakened down below typhoon strength at this stage, but heavy rainfall is occurring and the storm's slow movement is likely to cause flooding rains and landslides across the region, particularly in Wakayama and eastern Shikoku. The storm is expected to fall apart as it continues northwards, but could still produce strong winds and heavy rainfall along the sparsely populated coast of eastern Russia and Hokkaido.
In the Eastern Pacific, Hurricane Fernanda peaked earlier today as a Category 4, with a well defined eye. However, recent images suggest that the eyewall is starting to fall apart with a weakness to the west and a rapidly fading eye. The storm is expected to persist for a few more days out at sea.
Tropical Storm Greg formed earlier today along the threshold with the Central Pacific, narrowly avoiding being named Hone. The storm is expected to remain weak and straightforward as it moves westwards and dies off in a few days.
Near the coast of Mexico, a broad and powerful cyclone is expected to form later this week and could affect the coastal regions, and later on head towards the Baja California peninsula. Some models suggest that the storm could go on to affect southern California as a post-tropical gale.
In the Atlantic, two areas of interest could make a mark in the next week, with one system possibly affecting Cape Verde with tropical storm force winds. However, cool sea surface temperatures should bring the storm's life to an abrupt halt in relatively quick succession.

Lan makes landfall into Japan and it seems that less typhoon landfalls and rains will experience in the Philippines, but more typhoon landfalls throughout Japan that may cause damage, flooding and landslides because of El Niño before the end of 2023.
